The On the Matter of Race Experience is a six-month facilitated journey toward open, meaningful, honest conversations about racism and taking action to address it, designed for White people. On The Matter of Race is facilitated by an African American mother and son team, Dr. Lynne Maureen Hurdle and Justin Hurdle-Price. It is currently offered from Level 1 – Level 5 with each group gaining historical knowledge, engaging in deep discussions, examining internal beliefs, attitudes and actions as well as learning from the experiences presented by guest speakers. We also offer two free online summits that are open to the public devoted to bringing together experts to teach and share their experiences on systemic racism and how it affects all of our lives.
Created by Dr. Lynne Maureen Hurdle, On the Matter of Race is a container where White People who truly want to contribute to changing the racist systems in the United States of America are taught to dismantle the psychological structures in their mind to fully open their eyes to the disparity between Blacks and Whites in the world around them.
Throughout this journey, students are exposed to atrocities and covert racism Black People experience on a daily basis. Students are shown the ugly side of racism in America that they’ve been shielded from by delving into media like, “My Grandmother’s Hands” by Resmaa Menakem, watching the award-winning documentary on Black maternal morbidity, “Aftershock” and listening to one of the participants in the documentary, Shawnee Benton Gibson LMSW /FLDC.
It’s only through our program and events are students able to fully understand their responsibility in supporting the fight for equality for all people. We believe that through our program White People are able to take on the role of White Comrades, those who are willing to put themselves into incredibly uncomfortable situations to provide aid in the dismantling of systemic racism.
What began as a simple conversation between two well meaning White women asking Dr. Hurdle, a proud African-American woman, what they can do to contribute to the eradication of racism sparked a movement that has White People from all over the country checking their privilege to put on the mantle of White Comradeship and joining the fight against systemic racism.
