On The Matter Of Race
LET'S CONNECT, LEARN, HEAL & TAKE ACTION TOGETHER AGAINST RACISM
This Is a Live Opportunity
On The Matter of Race (OTMR) is hosting its very first Live In-Person Conference on September 15-18, 2023 in Washington, D.C.

OTMR Live represents an opportunity to meet other OTMR folks who have made the commitment to learn and do something about racism in the United States. You will learn from guest speakers including some of our very own OTMR participants.

Support Dr. Lynne Maureen Hurdle, Justin Nai’im Hurdle-Price and special guest speakers in our three-and-a-half day journey of powerful and meaningful teaching, conversations, gatherings and an incredible excursion; all meant to expand the OTMR six-month journey experience.
Did You Know?
Suicide disproportionately impacts Black Americans…
HIV/AIDS disproportionately impacts Black Americans...
Since 2017, suicide has been the second leading cause of death for Black youth between ages 10-19 years old. Rates of suicide have risen faster than in any other racial/ethnic group in the past two decades with suicide rates increasing by 60% since then.
Black women with HIV have the highest number of years lost to premature death in comparison to any other racial group according to a recent 20-year-long study conducted in Tennessee.

Mental health and substance use disorder disproportionately impacts Black Americans…
Maternal Morbidity disproportionately impacts Black Americans...
Mental health conditions and substance use disorders are often under recognized, undertreated, or misdiagnosed due in part to bias, discrimination, and structural racism. Black youth who come to clinical attention are often diagnosed with behavioral problems, rather than other mental health conditions that identify an increased risk for suicide. They are more likely to receive poor quality care and are less likely to receive follow-up care after discharge.

Black maternal morbidity is significantly higher than that of White maternal morbidity. In some areas of the country, such as Maryland, Black women are four times more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death than White women. This sharp contrast in mortality rates seems impossible in the 21st century. However, a survey conducted in 2016 on White medical students concluded that nearly half held false beliefs about biological differences in Black patients, including thicker skin and less sensitive nerve endings.

THESE WELL-DOCUMENTED INEQUITIES IN THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM ARE JUST AN EXAMPLE OF WHY BLACK PEOPLE FOSTER STRONG DISTRUST IN HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS. IN TURN, THIS DISTRUST LEADS TO LIMITATIONS IN OPPORTUNITIES FOR PREVENTION, IDENTIFICATION, AND TIMELY INTERVENTION THAT REINFORCE SYSTEMIC RACISM.

IT’S ONLY THROUGH THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE WHITE PEOPLE WHO ARE SUPPORTED BY AND/OR RUN THESE PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEMS CAN WE BEGIN TO DISMANTLE THESE STRUCTURES THAT DEGRADE BLACK LIFE.

I'M IN... I WANT TO HELP!
What Is the Work Required to Become a White Comrade?
The On the Matter of Race Experience is a 6-month community experience in which White People are exposed to the world of systemic racism in order to understand the divide between being a White Person in the United States of America and being a Black, Indigenous, Latinx or Asian Person. Here students are challenged to deconstruct the privilege, subconscious bias, historical racism, systematic segregation and lifestyle differences that separate White People, Black People and other people of color.

Created by Dr. Lynne Maureen Hurdle, On the Matter of Race is a container where White People who truly want to contribute to changing the racist systems in the United States of America are taught to dismantle the psychological structures in their mind to fully open their eyes to the disparity between Blacks and Whites in the world around them.

Throughout this journey, students are exposed to atrocities and covert racism Black People experience on a daily basis. Students are shown the ugly side of racism in America that they’ve been shielded from by delving into media like, “My Grandmother’s Hands” by Resmaa Menakem, watching the award-winning documentary on Black maternal morbidity, “Aftershock” and listening to one of the participants in the documentary, Shawnee Benton Gibson LMSW /FLDC.

The continuation of learning, conversing and discussing about the racial inequities in the healthcare system will continue at the conference with guest, Dr. Linda Lausell Bryant LMSW /FLDC, who’ll be sharing her perspective on the severe mental health issues that are rampant in the Black and Latinx communities. Students will also experience a guided tour through the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History to further explore the evolution of systemic racism.

It’s only through these exercises are students able to fully understand their responsibility in supporting the fight for equality for all people. We believe that through our program White People are able to take on the role of White Comrades, those who are willing to put themselves into incredibly uncomfortable situations to provide aid in the dismantling of systemic racism.

What began as a simple conversation between two well meaning White women asking Dr. Hurdle, a proud African-American woman, what they can do to contribute to the eradication of racism sparked a movement that has White People from all over the country checking their privilege to put on the mantle of White Comradeship and joining the fight against systemic racism.
